The Art of Claude-Gerard Jean

This collection of five new artworks by Claude Gerard exemplify the artist’s nuanced approach to Op art, where geometric rigor and optical illusion converge to create a sense of active visual engagement. Drawing from the traditions of 1960s Op art, Gerard builds upon this lineage with a contemporary sensibility, using symmetrical, lattice-like patterns that vibrate with kinetic energy. The eye is drawn into and across the surface, activating a sensation of motion that contradicts the physical stillness of the work. This contrast between appearance and reality is foundational to Gerard’s artistic investigation.

Central to his pieces is the use of repetition and symmetry, which Gerard uses not just for visual effect, but as a meditative structure. These works function as visual mandalas—objects that demand prolonged looking, inviting viewers into a contemplative state. The central floral or starburst-like forms anchor the compositions, while the radiating patterns destabilize the gaze. This tension between focus and disorientation mirrors the internal processes of thought, introspection, and altered perception—key themes in Gerard’s practice.

A unique feature is their integration of sculptural qualities through layered surfaces and reflected color. The slight depth created by cut or built-up surfaces allows light to pass through or reflect within the work, subtly illuminating colored elements beneath the dominant black-and-white pattern. This interplay of material and light transforms the flat optical design into something tactile and immersive. In doing so, Gerard bridges the gap between painting and sculpture, a recurring interest in his multidisciplinary approach.

These formal choices are deeply connected to Gerard’s conceptual concerns. With a background in nursing and a personal interest in mental health and counter-culture, Gerard’s work often explores the relationship between perception, consciousness, and the body. The psychological effect of these optical patterns—at once hypnotic and destabilizing—can be read as metaphors for the complexities of the human mind. By destabilizing visual perception, Gerard mirrors the fragile balance of inner experience, offering viewers a space to reflect on their own mental landscapes.

Ultimately, these works serve not only as optical experiments but as visual meditations—objects that slow time and heighten awareness. Claude Gerard uses the language of Op art to do more than challenge vision; he encourages introspection. His art is a celebration of the intimate interplay between sensation and emotion, control and chaos. Through this layered, perceptual experience, Gerard reminds us of the delicate threads that tie together the personal and the universal, the visual and the psychological.

ATLANTA PRINTMAKERS STUDIO 7TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL

We are pleased to announce our fourth exhibition for 2025 : The 7th Atlanta Printmakers Studio Print Biennial 2025

The Atlanta Print Biennial is an international juried exhibition, open to all artists working in hand-pulled printmaking processes. The exhibit is organized by Atlanta Printmakers Studio and hosted by Kai Lin Art, a contemporary art gallery located in the vibrant Westside District of Midtown Atlanta, GA. Atlanta Print Biennial 2025 is June 13 – July 11, 2025.

This year’s juror, Todd Anderson, received a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a MFA from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Over the course of several years, he apprenticed at Tandem Press, eventually becoming a fine art collaborative master printer. Today, Anderson balances a vigorous studio practice with working at Clemson University, where he teaches interdisciplinary courses that intersect art, rhetorics, and the climate crisis. Anderson’s artwork has been acquired by ~35 notable institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Afriterra Library, the Davis Museum at Wellesley College, the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, the Asheville Museum of Art, Nevada Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, Stanford and Yale Universities, and the U.S. Library of Congress. Anderson’s artworks have been exhibited ~150 times nationally and internationally, including at Art Basel Miami, the New York Affordable Art Fair, Scope London, and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Atlanta Printmakers Studio (APS) was established to support the fine art of printmaking in metro Atlanta. Founders envisioned an organization that would provide a well-equipped printmaking studio for local artists as well as raise the awareness of printmaking as an art form. In August 2005 the incorporation papers were signed and in December 2006 APS’s 501c3 non-profit status was approved – Atlanta Printmakers Studio was founded.

Local art centers, universities, and galleries made available their facilities and galleries for workshops and exhibits as APS built membership and formed the organization. During the first year APS received many generous equipment donations. However, we needed of a permanent home. After many months of looking at potential studio space APS moved into the Metropolitan Warehouse complex. The doors opened in November 2006 near downtown Atlanta, and classes began in January 2007. Over the years APS has become a vital printmaking resource for artists, collectors, college students and children.

LEISURE Artist Talk!

Dear Art Peoples,

You are cordially invited to our:

LEISURE Artist Talk
Saturday, May 31st, 2025
4:00 - 6:00pm
RSVP :: info@kailinart.com

Join Chad Hayward, Hail Holtzclaw, Claude-Gerard Jean, George Galbreath, and Santi Saucedo for a lively discussion of the state of contemporary art in our age of flux.

The Art of Hail Holtzclaw

In this series of charcoal drawings, shown in a dimly lit gallery space, Hail Holtzclaw presents a curious stillness. Each scene is suspended in a moment of leisure that seems to teeter on the cusp of an unraveling. In the center is a scene cropped just below the knee, featuring a T-strap heel, clad in fishnet stockings. Holtzclaw’s work conveys a keen elegance— it is poised even when paused in mid-stride. On either side, more mysterious compositions unfold, balanced by energy and quietude. On the left is a glass vase of monochrome roses, rendered in a late-20’s style illustrative realism. The piece hints at a past romance that is now mourned. On the right is a cabaret scene with towering milkshakes that are at the mercy of patrons’ flailing limbs.  Holtzclaw’s depicts a choir of sundry expressions that evoke a dreamlike scene of debauchery, caught just before something breaks loose.

Together, the works radiate what might be called Velveture—a term suggesting something plush, dark, and softly electric. The mood is hushed, thick with anticipation. These are not just drawings; they are visual intermissions, moments where time dilates and characters—florals, figures, footwear—hover in the charged quiet between events. Leisure, here, is not restful but restless, teetering on the verge of collapse or transformation. The series is a meditation on the tension held in stillness, the unspoken undercurrents in moments that seem serene.

This painting exudes a surreal, noir-style atmosphere that connects intriguingly with the aesthetic and thematic essence of Velveture—a term that evokes velvety darkness, lush textures, and a dreamlike glamour tinged with unease. Rendered in a black-and-white airbrush style, the image possesses a velvety smoothness—soft gradients, glowing whites, and rich shadows—that perfectly embodies the tactile softness suggested by the word itself. It feels like a dream suspended in fog, seductive yet eerie. The figures are dressed in formal, mid-20th-century attire, evoking the glamorous aesthetics of vintage Hollywood or noir films.

Their wide-eyed expressions and dramatic lighting lend a theatrical, almost uncanny quality, tapping into Velveture’s fascination with elegance laced with strangeness. The towering milkshakes and bowl of snacks on the table recall 1950s Americana innocence, but the glow they emit and the tension in the characters’ faces twist this nostalgia into something darker. There are hints of the supernatural or psychedelic in the ghostly background figures and swirling flame-like forms, suggesting a departure from reality and blurring the sensual with the spectral. The entire composition feels staged like a cinematic still—frozen, performative, mysterious—mirroring Velveture’s obsession with surface, illusion, and hidden stories. Ultimately, this painting feels like a visual manifesto for Velveture, presenting a world both alluring and unsettling, cloaked in the softness of illusion yet haunted by something just beneath its glossy surface.

The Art of Chad Hayward

Chad Hayward’s artworks, composed of acrylic, spray paint, hemp thread, and hand-dyed linen, presents a vivid exploration of form and color that speaks directly to the concept of leisure. At first glance, the artwork’s intricate layers of brightly hued dots and meandering patterns evoke a sense of wonder and contemplation. This visual complexity encourages viewers to pause and immerse themselves in the painting, experiencing it slowly and deliberately. Such an invitation to spend unhurried time with the work aligns with the essence of leisure—an opportunity to detach from structured routines and engage with art in a meditative, open-ended way.

The materials and process behind his work further enrich its connection to leisure. Hayward’s choice to incorporate hand-dyed linen and hemp thread signals a tactile and time-consuming approach to making, where the act of creation itself becomes a form of mindful leisure. These techniques suggest a rhythm of repetition and attention to detail that is less about urgency and more about presence and engagement. The artwork’s layered textures, formed by careful application of dots and lines, echo the kind of focused, peaceful state often associated with leisurely activities like embroidery, walking, or observing nature.

Finally, the work’s organic composition and radiant color palette evoke feelings of joy, playfulness, and escape—emotional states commonly linked to leisure. The swirling shapes and patchworks of color resemble natural landscapes or dreamlike terrains, offering viewers a sensory journey away from the constraints of everyday life. In this way, Hayward’s artwork functions not only as an object of aesthetic interest but also as a visual metaphor for the mental and emotional space that leisure makes possible: one of curiosity, imagination, and restoration.

LEISURE
We are excited to announce our third exhibition of 2025 :: LEISURE a group exhibition featuring new art from CHAD HAYWARD, HAIL HOLTZCLAW, CLAUDE GERARD JEAN, GEORGE GALBREATH, and SANTI SAUCEDO

In an age where productivity is often equated with value, this exhibition reclaims leisure as a radical and generative space. The show brings together five contemporary artists whose practices embrace slowness, daydreaming, play, and the unstructured as vital components of creation. Rather than viewing leisure as separate from labor, the works on view suggest that time spent in contemplation, rest, or pleasure can open doors to new ideas, forms, and meanings.

Leisure here is not passive—it is an active, chosen resistance to urgency, a way of being that nurtures experimentation and authentic expression. Through diverse media and approaches, the exhibition asks what kind of art emerges when we make space simply to be.

The Art of The New South 6

Juror Chloe Alexander’s Statement
The South is a place of rich complexity—a woven tapestry of resilience, tradition, and transformation. In The New South, we explore the evolving landscape of this region through the perspectives of artists at various stages in their careers. This exhibition brings together a diverse group of creators who challenge, reimagine, and celebrate what it means to be "Southern" in the 21st century.

Each artist in The New South contributes to a dialogue that blurs the lines between past and present. From the enduring legacy of Southern craftsmanship to innovative approaches in contemporary artmaking, this show reveals how artists who call the South home are shaped by, and in turn, shape the narratives of their communities.

Here, traditional works on paper are reinterpreted alongside contemporary experimentation and conceptual frameworks, unfolding into layered compositions—offering both personal introspection and communal reflection. The artworks become mirrors, reflecting a South that is at once familiar and foreign, redefined by the multiplicity of voices that make up our evolving collective identity.

Kai Lin Art is proud to present this collection of voices that collectively reimagine the South not as a static place, but as a living, breathing idea — welcome to The New South.

Juror Tim Flower’s Statement
Through new narratives and methods, traditional stories reimagined, or inventive material combinations, this representative swath of artists and artworks show us the diversity of ideas and directions we are all a part of. We are the New South.
