This body of work explores the relationship between destiny and free will as it affects the course of life. Is human existence guided by free will, destiny, or both? Do we have complete control over our pathsor is individual life a part of a larger cause? As individual paths cross, connect, and touch, they undoubtedly affect one another and determine our destiny.
In these paintings, the circular, organic forms represent both interpersonal activity and the endless possibilities that life presents us. Each line becomes an element that defines the individual, connecting the individual to something larger, a universal truth. The relationship of the indivudal forms sharing space as it touches the next form shows how each individual element influences and is influenced.
Human life has a linear nature but there are so many layers and circumstances that impact our lives. As shape, line, and color are layerd one upon another, an intricate pattern develops and you begin to see the complexity of life and the inherent challenges as well as the beauty of life. In each piece, patterns created by the layering of formal elements represents the metamorphosis that is ever present in the transformation of our lives through time.
We may never really know for certain if the events in our lives are the result of destiny or choice. In this series, Crawford paintings reveal the nature of our existence that through all of our collective choices, human destiny is created.
