DREW WATTS

YTMAYD II oil on canvas

Recent paintings of mine use contemporary techniques of portraying the figure in a landscape, drawing from contemporary approaches of depicting the figure in a landscape, while also using elements from past artists to contribute to the works in a holistic temporal sense.

Conceptually, I aim to create a discussion of society and sexuality, beginning with contemporary opinion and alluding to historical thought.  What interests me is that a society can constrain a person deviating from the heterosexual norm, as well as the sources that led to this thinking.  These paintings are intended to have you think, inspire considerations of another’s experiences in a way that may not have been considered before.

Foundation for these works came about through preliminary research.  This included the depiction of the figure and landscape by various artists, such as contemporary painters Cecily Brown, Gerhard Richter and Hernan Bas, but also past artists such as Claude Monet and Mary Cassat. Studying these artists and their work helped create a formal focus of the work- things such as composition, methods of rendering, color scheme, and other qualities.  I may draw from Cecily Brown in depicting the figure, while deriving conceptual ideas from Hernan Bas, then containing all of these elements in a composition derived from Monet.

These works intend to exhibit a new portrayal of figure in landscape painting, as well as an aspect of history and culture that is closed to many people.  Ultimately, the project offers a change in thinking about painting and figure portrayal, as well as certain issues of our own culture and society.
