Monsters are one of my favorite things! My head is filled with crazy creatures and this show was an amazing opportunity to let the monsters out and let their freak-flag fly. I love exaggeration. I just keep stretching, squashing, and pushing my characters until they are just as they should be.
Each of these monsters have their own personalities, so when I start drawing, I had to let them just be themselves and tell me what they look like. I love all of them, as paintings and as personalities. Each piece exhibits all of the unique weirdness, quirkiness, and passion that I am, without any restraint.
I used an oil paint rubout technique for each painting. It’s a subtractive process where the entire canvas is painted and then the image is slowly rubbed out of it with oil. The process then becomes a dance between adding and taking away paint. Underneath the surface of paint are layers of mastic, built up to make texture and give the monsters more dimension.
