The Art of Sun Hong
July watercolor and acrylic 15 x 15 inches
I walk the fine line where fate and willpower meet. I put myself in a place where the unpredictable can happen, where anything can happen. Fortunately with paint, it’s always a safe place. The natural behaviors of watercolor inspire the outcome of each composition. Water dropping into water creates concentric circles. Pigment dropping into water creates swirls and spreads into a radiant fractal.
Centripetal watercolor 15 x 15 inches
The paper wrinkles and forces the pigment and water to run into a particular direction. I watch with fascination as one pool of water collides with another pool. A new shape forms. A new color is born. A new direction is found. While observing these behaviors, I cannot help but wonder “How much of the universe is methodically and mathematically planned? How much of it is a happy accident?” Could it be that there is just a lovely balance where fate and will power meet?’
